Please read below to hear about our Summer School 2011
The Anna Fiorentini Summer School at Princess May School in Dalston was an enormous success in 2011. We were overwhelmed by the positive response from parents, staff and students – so a huge thank you to everyone who was involved.
Our teachers included Mark Short – choreographer to Tina Turner and Peter Andre, Jessica Gerger – star of the West End’s Vegemite Tales and her own one-woman show and Mike Turnbull – Musical Director who has worked on shows such as Beauty & the Beast and The Wiz.
We used a variety of Musical Theatre numbers from some of the West End and Broadway’s best-loved shows, including Hairspray and We Will Rock You. We tend to favour Variety Performances as this gives everyone the chance to shine! The theme of the show was ‘School’s Out’ and our Creative Team did a fantastic job of linking the show-stopping routines with hilarious drama pieces and ensemble movement.
The Summer School brought together current Anna Fiorentini students, local children from the Hackney area and a number of international students – from as far a field as Taiwan, Brazil and Italy. It was wonderful to see how many new friends had been made by the end of just one week of working together.
One of the highlights included a group trip to the West End hit, Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre. The energy of the performances, the snappy script and catchy show-tunes really motivated our pupils and we noticed a tangible improvement in their own performances from that point. Our school always aims to broaden horizons and provide live examples of the performing arts in action to show our students what is possible with a bit of commitment and hard work.
The show at the end of the week was performed in front of friends and family. There was a lot of laughter, a few tears (of pride from the parents!) and a lot of lasting friendships made. It was an emotional and inspirational end to a fantastic week. This has persuaded us to redouble our efforts next year and we are planning on holding two Summer Schools, at the beginning and end of August, to meet increasing demand and allow as many students as possible to have this wonderful experience.
